Abducted girl found alive in rural community
Residents of Parkes Road in Above Rocks, St Catherine, are still baffled after a teenage girl who was reportedly abducted, was later pushed from a moving vehicle in the usually quiet community on Tuesday night.
They say the incident has left them disturbed and angry, warning criminals not to use their district as a dumping ground for illegal activities.
"Them things yah nuh happen regular inna the place. Over 26 years now me live here and mi neva hear nothing like this yet alone fi see it. Me never see when she get push out a the car, but a when she drop down [it] draw mi attention and we start fan her and mi tell them fi give her water fi drink," one eyewitness explained.
"From me look pon her mi know seh dem give her some form a drugs. As she drink the water and little a the orange juice she start vomit up and a so she revive back." Residents said that the girl struggled to give details as she drifted in and out of consciousness. But she was able to give her name and where she was from.
According to information from Senior Superintendent Randy Sweeney, commanding officer of the St Andrew North Division, the incident began earlier that evening. Reports are that the 17-year-old student left her home about 4 p.m. to attend extra classes in Half-Way Tree. About 5 p.m., she reportedly boarded a taxi at Cross Roads. While inside the vehicle, she observed a woman seated in the back. Shortly after entering, the woman allegedly placed a bag over her head.
"The teenager reportedly remembers nothing else until she later regained consciousness. Residents along Parkes Road later saw someone being pushed from a motor vehicle and rushed to investigate. They discovered the teenager along the roadway and contacted the police. At the time, she was drifting in and out of consciousness and was unable to provide contact information for her mother. The police later made contact with her parent, and the teenager was assisted to the Kingston Public Hospital where she is undergoing treatment," he said.
How the situation unfolded highlights a worrying tactic now being used by criminals.
"Really and truly, even as an adult, if me see a woman in a taxi, I would feel more comfortable taking it. That's why she probably take the car in the first place. A so dem a do it now, have the woman dem a work with them. Mi just glad she survive it because so many times them find dead," one resident said.
Residents stressed that incidents like these are rare in their close-knit farming community and warned that criminals would not be welcomed there.
"If we did see when she get push out a the car a different thing you woulda come report pon today. This a one peaceful community most of the people dem a farmer and a out here so we mek money every day, so we nuh want inna the media fi dem thing yah," one man said.
"We nah uphold dem foolishness deh," another resident said. "If she did eva mek an alarm as them push her out a the vehicle, we woulda mek an example out a dem. A one straight road in and out, dem wouldn't mek it back a Above Rocks."
