Racing United’s Shavaun Reid heads the ball in a challenge with Molynes United’s Dhumar McLaughlin during the Jamaica Premier League football encounter at Constant Spring playing field on Sunday. Racing United won 1-0.

Dwight Gentles' goal five minutes from time gave Racing United an important 1-0 win over Molynes United in Jamaica Premier League (JPL) football at Constant Spring on Sunday.

Staring another draw in the face - with 12 from 23 matches this term - Racing needed three points to stay second, and 18-year-old substitute Gentles produced the crucial finish for victory.

Racing United's head coach Anthony Patrick said the club's faith in young players continues to pay dividends.

"We continue to believe in youngsters and giving them opportunities and one came off the bench and got the result for us," he said.

"If I never believed in him (Gentles) he wouldn't have gotten the opportunity. I believe in him a whole lot. From school days until now he has been scoring a lot of goals, some crucial goals, and he came up trumps today. We are very elated for him," said Patrick of the St Catherine High School player.

The win kept Racing second on 42 points, seven adrift of Montego Bay United who defeated Cavalier 1-0 to move to 49 points. Cavalier remained eighth on 29 points. Mount Pleasant are third on 41.

Molynes had the worst start, as Sergeni Frankson was shown the red card after only 18 minutes.

Racing got the winner when Gentles turned home Tajay Grant's cross with the outside of the boot from six yards.

Molynes assistant coach Xavian Virgo said the red card hurt them badly.

"It shifted the tide of the game and it was a little bit difficult for my team to come out and execute as we wanted," he said.

Molynes are 11th in the table on 23 points, seven points above the relegation zone.

Chapelton climbed up to fifth in the table on 32 points after a 2-0 win over Treasure Beach, who lie 12th on 22 points. Sean Leighton opened the scoring in the 53rd minute and Jason Wright sealed the victory with an added-time goal.

At Royal Lakes Complex, Spanish Town Police bounced back from their 5-0 demolition by Cavalier, to stun Harbour View 1-0 on Carrington Blackwood's 70th-minute strike.

At Drax Hall, host Mount Pleasant got goals from Raheem Edwards, Daniel Green, Shaquile Bradford and Alex Marshall in a 4-0 rout of Dunbeholden, who are 10th on 26 points.

Spanish Town and Harbour View remain in the relegation zone on 15 and 16 points, respectively.

In the day's late game, Waterhouse and Tivoli Gardens battled to a 1-1 draw at Drewsland Mini Stadium.

Waterhouse climbed to sixth on 31 points, while Tivoli Gardens are ninth on 29 points.

Fourth-placed Portmore United (39) will play seventh-placed Arnett (30) in the Monday Night match.
