U20 Boyz start Qualifiers with win over Bonaire
The U20 Reggae Boyz opened their Concacaf Men's U20 Qualifiers campaign with a comfortable 3-0 win over Bonaire at the Stadion Rignaal 'Jean' Francisca in Curacao in Group B action.
Goals from Sean Leighton in the 24th minute, defender Deshawn Lambert in the 43rd and substitute Raequan Campbell-Dennis in the 72nd sealed the win for the young Boyz.
In the other games across the group, Puerto Rico held off St Kitts and Nevis 2-1, while Turks and Caicos Islands pulled off a 2-1 comeback win over the Cayman Islands.
It took a while for the Boyz to find their shooting boots as despite waves of pressure, they could not break Bonaire's defence in the opening exchanges.
Leighton opened the scoring near the half-hour mark as he was, at the right time, at the right place, to head into an empty net off an initial shot from Jahmarie Nolan that was parried by the goalkeeper.
The Boyz made it two just before the half-time whistle as Lambert doubled the lead with a bit of luck. What should have been an easy save turned into a goalkeeping error for Bonaire as miscommunication around the back allowed for Lambert's header to score.
Jamaica found their third goal in the second half, this time with a composed finish from Campbell-Dennis.
Defender Marlon van de Wetering rounded his marker into the box before cutting the ball back into the path of Campbell-Dennis, who scored with a one-time finish.
Jamaica ended the game with 10 men as Jamoy Dennis received a second yellow card card in the 83rd minute.
With the day's results, Jamaica now sit atop Group B with three points, tied on points with Puerto Rico and Turks and Caicos Islands. However, the young Reggae Boyz hold the advantage with a better goal difference.
Jamaica's next fixture will see them taking on Turks and Caicos Islands tomorrow.
The group winner will advance to the Concacaf Men's U20 Championships, where they will join the six pre-seeded teams from the region.
The U20 Championship will serve as the qualification tournament for the 2027 FIFA Men's U20 World Cup and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
