A big first for Mount Pleasant
Mount Pleasant Football Academy secured their first hold on the Concacaf Caribbean Cup, after a hard-fought 2-2 draw with ten-man Universidad O&M FC in the second leg of the final at the National Stadium last night, for a 3-2 aggregate win.
O&M's Junior Capellan was shown the red card in the 27th minute, for a tackle on Kimoni Bailey. Despite playing a man short, Frantzety Herard put O&M ahead in the first half stoppage time.
Warner Brown then equalised in the 64th minute but Julen Olasagasti restored O&M' advantage five minutes later.
However, Tyreek Magee ensured the Jamaicans took home the trophy, with a low strike two minutes from regular time.
Mount Pleasant coach Theodore Whitmore said they did it the hard way but he was always confident they would take it.
"The Mount Pleasant team made it difficult for themselves. Playing against ten men can be hard and we left it late. But we had confidence we could do it," he said.
Mount Pleasant started out in control and had a few half chances, but nothing to really bother their opponents.
Raheem Edwards had a good chance after he broke in behind the O&M defence but a last-ditch tackle averted the danger.
The game took an unexpected twist in the 27th minute when Capellan was shown the red card for a tackle on Bailey.
However, O&M started to get a foothold in the game after going down a man, with Mount Pleasant assisting their efforts with some sloppy turnovers.
It was one such turnover from Gadial Irving, which allowed Herard to get in behind and lift the ball over a stranded Tafari Chambers for the opening goal.
Mount Pleasant started the second half with the same lack of conviction in attack, with the visitors looking more purposeful in the final third.
However, coach Theodore Whitmore went to his bench and brought on Shaquile Bradford and Raphael Intervil, and the pair had an immediate impact.
First Bradford had a shot parried across goal by goalkeeper Iraitz Gelbentzu and Intervil played the ball across goal for Brown to tap home from close range.
However, Olasagasti restored O&M lead 2-1 advantage on the night and tied the score 2-2 on aggregate with glancing header from a free kick, that gave his team the advantage on the away goal rule.
However, Magee (also a substitute), would save the Mount Pleasant blushes, after Intervil evaded his marker on the right and picked out the midfielder, who drilled a low shot beyond Gelbentzu to tie the score 2-2 on the night, for a 3-2 aggregate victory.
