Confident Gaye looks forward to 'trials'

New NCB Intercollegiate Track and Field Championships 400 m record holder Demish Gaye says he will be taking his new accomplishment as a serious one, as he looks forward to making his name at the upcoming national trials at the National Stadium in June.

The G.C. Foster College of Physical Education and Sport student was unsurprised by his record run at the recent championships, noting he trained and worked hard for it.

Gaye easily took centre stage as G.C. Foster College were crowned champions of both the male and female sections.

"I feel good about the performance, it was great. I did what I had to do and come out here and executed my race the way I wanted it to be," he said.

His impressive 45:57 seconds in the men's 400m final smashed the previous record of 45:93 seconds set in 2014 by national record holder Rusheen McDonald.

"The work was just great, good training. Now I am just looking forward to national trials and then we see from there," he said following his win.

The fast time run by Gaye who oozed confidence and showed fine execution was also one of the fourth-fastest times in the world this year.

He cruised to victory ahead of former Kingston College athlete Twayne Crooks (47:00) of UTech and Alvin Green (47:22), also of G.C. Foster.

"It feels special. I went in with confidence and I am very happy with how the season is progressing and just to see where I go from national trials now," an upbeat Gaye told STAR Sports.

He stressed that he is hoping to be a force to be reckoned with at the national trials in the exciting event which Jamaica has an upcoming cadre of quarter milers who many consider future world beaters.
